COMPOSITION:

NOTES:
My composition was inspired by modern techno music, such as music you would hear in nightclubs, electronic dance music (EDM) concerts, and rave festivals. Originally, I was going to turn Vivaldi’s Spring into a modern jazz composition, however, this plan changed and I decided to bring this classical piece into a more energetic setting. My goal was to give it a fresh, electronic, and upbeat twist, while still keeping the original melody recognizable.
The composition starts with the original melody played in a harpsichord-like voice to show its classical roots. As the piece progresses, the melody gradually changes into a digital/techno voice, marking the beginning of the transformation. Soon after, comes a beat drop, which introduces electronic beats, synths, and other effects. The main melody then returns but it cut up and rearranged to create a more energetic and techno feel. Another beat drop follows this, leading to the reoccurrence of the layers of beats and countermelody/chords introduced prior. Towards the end of the composition, the melody reappears one last time and slowly transitions back into its original classical state, creating a full circle moment.
In order to create my composition I used GarageBand. I started by extracting the main melody of the original piece, as I decided to use that for the piece instead of including the entire track of Vivaldi’s original Spring. Then I assignment a harpsichord-like voice to the melody to give it a more classical feel, instead of keeping it in the voice of a piano. After, I did the same things again but this time I put it in a digital synth voice and created a smooth transition from the harpsichord version to the techno version. This marks the beginning of the piece. I added electronic effects, synthetic beats, and bass to modernize the composition. To enhance the techno feel, I included multiple beat drops throughout the piece, layered electronic textures, and cut up sections of the original melody. The melody goes through phases of transformation before returning to its original sound at the end.
I am happy with how my composition turned out, considering the amount of time I had to create this piece and changes I had to make along the way. I originally planned on creating a jazz composition, however, due to a misunderstanding I had to adapt my idea of what I was going to make in the end. Even though this wasn’t my preferred process to creating the final composition, I found that transforming “Spring” into a techno piece in the limited amount of time worked really well. The final result adds an energetic, fresh twist, while keeping the original melody recognizable. I am glad I overcame this challenge and was able to come up with a transformed musical composition by which process I learned a lot by experimenting with different structures and sounds. Overall, I think my piece successfully blends classical and modern elements, making Vivaldi’s “Spring” more accessible to a new and younger audience.
