My Music Journey

“Never forget to be true to yourself and keep playing music. Then nothing can go wrong” – my grandfather

Hello, I am Leni, and music has been at the heart of my life for as long as I can remember. I grew up always being surrounded by the sounds of music, with a family that played a big part in nurturing my love for it. My grandfather, an orchestra conductor, and my grandma an opera and choir singer, filled my childhood with melodies and memories that have always been very special to me. My aunts carried on the tradition in bands and church choirs, and it seemed like everyone in my family has had an instrument in their hands at one point.

For me, the journey began when I started learning the piano at 11. Even though I enjoyed it, I didn’t really take it seriously at first. However, over the past few years, my passion for music has grown stronger and truly come alive. Now, music is like a constant companion that brings joy, comfort, and happiness into my life.

I love everything about music, from classical pieces to pop, jazz, and musicals. I believe music is so much more than just a sound; it’s a universal language that connects people, no matter where they’re from, what they believe in, or what language they speak. It has the power to tell stories, which simple words cannot and I am always amazed by how it moves and unites people.

Performing is one of my favorite things. Whether I’m singing, dancing, or playing the piano, I love sharing music with other people. I am constantly learning new songs, compositions, techniques, and skills, and I am very excited to see where this journey takes me.

While I don’t have an exact plan for my future, I know that music will always play a central/important role in my life. I am looking forward to keep growing, exploring, and finding new ways I can incorporate music into my life.

In S6, I began to develop a much better understanding of music and all its forms. When I first started this course, I only had little knowledge of music theory and composition, even though I was already playing the piano. During the year, I learned more about harmony, dynamics, rhythm, melody, and musical structure. I also started learning how to create compositions in GarageBand, which was very challanging for me at first.

Another important part of S6 was performance. I already knew how to play the piano but taking this class really helped me broaden my horizon and step out of my comfort zone. At first, I was not always confident performing infront of others, but having to do so on a regular basis through practice and performances, I slowly but steadily became more comfortable and expressive. I learned how important interpretation is in music and how performances can connect with audiences. Through different tasks and performances, I improved both my technical skills and my confidence in performing.

Most importantly, S6 music helped me reconnect with my love for music. Music has always been a part of my life growing up, but this class has made me appreciate it in a new way.

In S7, I continued to expand my musical knowledge and became even more confident in my composition and performance skills. I developed a better understanding of how to create compositions in GarageBand, through clear structure, atmosphere, melody, and layers. My compositions have become much more detailed and creative.

I also improved a lot as a pianist. Pieces like “Someone Like You” and “Passacaglia” challenged me musically and technically, and I am proud of the progress I was able to make. I became more confident in performing infront of others and learned how to control expression, dynamics, and my own interpretation better.

One of the most important achievements for me in S7 was creating my final composition. I see it as the peak of my compositions, clearly showing how much I worked and improved. I learned how to create an exciting piece that sounds rich and emotional without becoming chaotic.

Overall, S7 helped me grow not only as a musician but as a person. I regained my passion for music and developed skills that I will continue to use in my future. Looking back to the beginning of the course, I am very proud of the progress I made and where I am now.

Thank you for taking time to get to know me through this portfolio. I hope you enjoy learning about my musical journey as much as I have enjoyed living it.
