NOTES:
City of Stars is a calm and romantic song from the movie Lalaland. It is written in a jazz style and therefore has smooth melodies and gentle rhythms. It has an AABA form, which is common in jazz, and is in a slow tempo, giving it the romantic feeling. The piece begins with a simple and calm melody (the first A section), then the melody is repeated with slight variations (the second A section), after that comes the bridge (section B) which introduces a new theme to the song and is a bit more dramatic, lastly it returns to the original verse and comes back to the main melody (last section of A), concluding the piece and bringing back the calm feeling.
I chose City of Stars as my first performance because it is one of my favorite pieces on the piano. I enjoy the calm and dreamy melody and how simple yet expressive it is. I love jazz music, especially when played on the piano because of the rich and emotional chords they often have. On thing I struggle with sometimes when performing it is getting the rhythm right, especially because it has a very flowy/swing feel which is hard for me to imitate.
